Meet the Land Trust Protecting Norfolk’s Wild Side 🦋🌿

Did you know there’s an organization working behind the scenes to protect some of Norfolk County’s most beautiful natural spaces?

The Long Point Basin Land Trust (LPBLT) is a local nonprofit that safeguards wild spaces in our region — over 1,201 acres across 17 nature reserves! Their mission is to protect and restore habitats for native plants, animals, and species at risk. One of the best ways they connect with the community is through their Explore the Outdoors program — a series of free, family-friendly events that let you get hands-on with nature.

And this month, it’s all about moths and butterflies.

June 21 (Evening) & June 22 (Morning)
Spring Arbour Farm Nature Reserve

Get ready for a magical night under the stars! LPBLT’s “Creatures of the Night” event features glowing light traps and expert guidance from moth specialist Mary Gartshore. You’ll discover just how wild and wonderful our nighttime insects can be — from fuzzy owlet moths to giant emerald-green Lunas.

The next morning, return for a “Moth Discovery” session to see what was caught in the light traps — a perfect event for kids and photographers. For info, click here.

July 5 | 1–3PM
Sand Prairie Savanna Nature Reserve

Join butterfly biologist Jessica Linton for a guided walk through restored prairie habitat. Learn to spot and ID local butterflies, discover which plants they love, and find out how to help pollinators thrive in your own backyard. For more, click here.

Whether you’re a nature newbie or seasoned bug nerd, these events are a great excuse to get outside, meet some winged wonders, and support the folks working to keep Norfolk wild!

🎟️ All events are free, but registration is required:
